FAQ

Q. How do I join the team?
A. Thanks for your interest in Team BEAN! See team1833.org/apply for details on how to apply to join the team.

Q. Where is the team located?
A. The team works out of a workshop less than 10 minutes from exit 13 on GA 400.

Q. Who can join the team?
A. All high school students in Forsyth County are eligible to join the team, including private, public, and home-schooled students.

Q. Is there a cost to join the team?
A. Yes. This season, the team fee is $850 per student.

Q. What is covered by the team fees?
A. The team fees help cover the following:

  • Team lodging and food (as needed) for one offseason event
  • Team lodging and food (as needed) for two district qualifiers
  • Team lodging and food (as needed) for the district championship (if the team qualifies)
  • Team shirts
  • Team operating costs

The team fees do not cover transportation to the events listed above or the world championship (if we qualify).

Q. If I leave the team voluntarily or am dismissed/suspended from the team, can the team fees be refunded?
A. No.

Q. What are the team attendance requirements?
A. More information on team requirements and expectations can be found in the student handbook, but in general:

  • August – December (offseason): Attend at least one meeting per week.
  • January – April (regular season): Attend 80% of the practices related to your subteam.

Q. How often does the team have practices?
A. In the offseason (August to December), the team typically has about 2 practices per week. In the regular season (January to April), the team typically meets 4 times per week, though some practices may be designated for only specific subteams rather than the entire team. Meetings may be added or removed depending on need and mentor availability.

Q. I’m not interested in engineering. Can I still join the team?
A. Yes! Team BEAN isn’t just building a robot; we operate like a full business with needs for marketing, data analysis, and more. We have many roles and opportunities on the team that never involve the robot directly. See our subteams page for more information.

Q. I want to be on ____ subteam, but I don’t know anything. Can I still apply for that subteam?
A. Yes! Prior knowledge is not a requirement to join the team. As long as you’re willing to learn, our mentors and students are happy to teach you about the subteam you’re interested in.
